If you find that your roof is leaking, it is important to contact a roof repair specialist right away. There might be a small area on your roof that can be repaired, or there could be significant damage to your entire roof. By the time you see a leak in your home, the water coming into your home is substantial. You can end up with water damage, mold or mildew growth, and structural problems with your roof when you ignore leaks. Even if you have a fairly new roof, or you don't see any external damage, it's time to contact a roofing contractor to see what is going on.

The Problem May be Small

You could have some loose flashing on your roof, and water was able to get in during the last rainstorm. This is an easy fix, and will help you avoid more expensive repairs in the future. You might be concerned that you have a systemic roof problem that you can't afford to repair. Always get roof leaks assessed to determine the extent of the leak, and what needs to be done to repair it.

Water Causes Structural Damage

When water is able to get through your roof and into your home, it will eventually cause structural damage. You can have leaks go down into your walls, damaging the sheet rock, paint, and wallpaper. Water seeping into the wood of your home will eventually dry out and become brittle. Ignoring water coming into the home will lead to bigger and more expensive problems down the road.

Watch for Mold and Mildew

Even a small amount of water coming into your home can lead to a mold or mildew growth that becomes out of control. If you smell mold when you go into your crawl space looking for water damage, it is clear that mold is already there. You don't even need standing water for mold to grow, the moisture in the air is enough to keep mold growing. If you smell anything musty, call for help to fix the problem.

Your roof can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years if it an asphalt shingle roof. If you have damage from a storm, this should be repaired immediately. Get all leaks investigated quickly to avoid further damage to your home. If you smell odors coming from your crawl space or notice water stains, you need help to figure out what is going on with your roofing as soon as possible.
