When it comes to painting the interior of your home, you need to do more than choose the right paint colors for the interior of your home. You also need to choose the right type of paint. There are two primary types of paint to choose from, either latex or acrylic. There are various paint finishes to choose from.  

Paint Type 

First, you need to determine if you are purchasing acrylic or latex paint, which has different types of bases.  

Acrylic paint is made from acrylic pigments and resin. It is very durable and adheres to a wide range of surfaces. It is also resistant to fading due to exposure to water or sunlight. On the flip side, acrylic paint contains harmful chemicals and tends to be more expensive. 

Latex paint is made from vinyl resin and pigments and has a water base. Latex paint doesn't have the harmful chemicals in it that acrylic paint does and thus is safer to use in your home. It also tends to be cheaper to purchase but is more likely to chip and sun and water damage over time.  

Paint Finish 

Second, you need to determine what type of paint finishes you want. The finish is going to impact how the paint looks.  

One option is a matte finish, often referred to as a flat finish. This type of finish basically lacks any shine. It is great for areas of your home that don't get a lot of traffic and usage. It is not a good choice for high traffic areas, as it can easily get damaged if you clean your walls at all.  

A commonly used finish is satin, as it has a little bit of a shine, but not too much. It is excellent at covering up imperfections, and it can be used in areas of your home that get regular amounts of traffic. Eggshell is often used in hallways and entryways.  

If you want your paint to look great, you will want to go with a satin finish. With a satin finish, you will get to enjoy a more shiny and colorful-looking paint job. Satin is also designed to be easy to clean, which means that it is a great finish to use in spaces such as your bathroom and kitchen, where you may need to wipe down the walls regularly. 

Finally, there is high-gloss paint. High gloss paint is as shiny as it comes and is really durable. High-gloss paints tend to be used for detailed painting, such as trim or cabinets. High-gloss paint can also be used for your kitchen and bathroom walls.
